Zika Virus Hysteria Got You Worked Up?

The other day a lady friend called to ask what I thought about the Zika virus.  She said she needed to hurry up and get pregnant and get through her first trimester before summer arrived in her southern state– bringing mosquitoes– so that her baby would not be born with microcephaly if she caught the Zika virus.

This was a real phone call.  A real concern.  From a really smart woman.

I’m going to share with you what I said to her in that moment of genuine concern for her yet-to-be-conceived child:Calm Your Tits

Seriously. Smooth them down, ladyfriend.  Relax.  I do not buy for one moment that the Zika virus— which was been studied for 70 years and has never been linked to microcephaly– is causing babies in Brazil to be born with tiny heads.

Being the quack that I am, three questions first came to mind.

  1. What is the pesticide regulation situation in Brazil?
  2. Is there a Zika virus vaccine coming down the turnpike?
  3. Have prenatal vaccines been recently introduced to Brazilian women?

Let me start by saying that while some headlines are screaming that Brazil is “badly losing the battle” and the virus is “spreading explosively” across the country, the truth is that the criteria used to determine that 4,000 Brazilian babies had microcephaly is a head measurement of 33 centimeters or less. That would put 10% of American newborns into the microcephaly category.  So either this is an epidemic of overly broad diagnostic criteria or we’ve got 400,000 cases of microcephaly in the US each year.  (Spoiler: we actually have 25,000 cases in the US every year that you never hear about.)

Anyway.  Eight months pre-Zika-hysteria Reuters ran this enlightening article entitled “Why Brazil has a big appetite for risky pesticides.”  It turns out that Brazil has the dubious distinction of buying even more pesticides than the United States, which was previously the largest consumer of pesticides in the world.  They spend 10 billion dollars a year on herbicides, insecticides and fungicides. Not only that, but Brazil uses highly poisonous pesticides that are not even allowed to be used in the US, trumping our high threshold for toxic exposure to our peoples. Most of the food grown and sold in Brazil violates their own national safety standards; it certainly violates the standards for the rest of the world.

If you took a college-level biology class you probably studied cell sodium channels.  I won’t get too deep into it but it’s suffice to say that they are crucial to development. There is one particular insecticide class called pyrethroids that act on insect sodium channels and disrupt neuro-development. It is also known that if a seizure medicine that acts on the very same sodium channels is used in pregnancy it has a side effect of… can you guess?  Microcephaly.  Maybe we should quit messing with sodium channels? Maybe we should not let pregnant women eat/breathe/touch chemicals that disrupt sodium channels?  Maybe it’s a bad idea to crop dust a school with this stuff, Brazil?

Also on the pesticide list is an old favorite called Atrazine, best known for causing transgendered frogs, but is also responsible for making babies with small heads.

And I hate to break it to you (not really, I love breaking it to you) that we already have people with the Zika virus in the US and only one case is linked microcephaly, but it’s in the Monsanto testing ground petri dish we like to call Hawaii.

Am I saying that Detective Quack has solved the Case of the Tiny Baby Heads?  No, I’m not.  I’m just saying there are explanations a lot more feasible in a crooked country like Brazil than a mosquito virus suddenly causing permanent disability to unborn children.

Next up is the “Praise Baby Jesus” news that a Zika vaccine is on a “blindingly fast” timeline to be ready to test on people before the end of the year.  Personally, I don’t think the media can sustain the Zika hype for that long.  The Great Ebola Scare fizzled and died before the Ebola vaccine even got out of its phase II trial.  I’m sure all of the factors the media has to consider in launching mass hysteria during a drug trial makes things tricky to say the least.  Lots of moving parts.

Lastly, it was just at the end of 2014– 14 months before Zika hysteria– that the Tdap vaccine was mandated for pregnant women in Brazil. The order came down in October, and 10 months later the first cases of microcephaly were seen by local doctors.  So these poor women who are eating pesticide-soaked food, breathing pesticide-filled air, and probably drinking pesticide-poisoned water (except that the municipalities don’t even bother to participate in testing) are now vaccinated against their will with a Class C drug with no adequate studies in humans while pregnant.

I mean, in 2000 Brazil “inadvertently” vaccinated 480 pregnant women with the yellow fever vaccine so I’d be hard to convince that they’re looking out for anyone’s reproductive rights.

Has this virus been making its way around?  Sure.  Are people infected with it? You bet.  But if correlation is the new causation I’d like to talk to the media and health department about this little thing called vaccine-induced autism.

What is more likely to happen:  the Brazilian government admits they have poisoned people and stolen lives, or they instead blame mosquitoes?   In a time where people are outraged about Bill Gates’ genetically engineered mosquitoes being released into the wild (including but not limited to Brazil) maybe the media is hoping everyone hops on the Thank God for GE Mosquitoes bandwagon.  Don’t fall for it.

In closing, my guess is that what we’ve got here is a misdiagnosed non-epidemic of probable pesticide poisoning and vaccine injury fueled by an American media bored with talking about Hillary Clinton’s email server. So calm your tits.

On another point, didn’t appreciate the tone directed towards “a crooked country like Brazil.”

If we go back to a period of the Green Revolution, Brazil was dangled a carrot and got in to bed with big, dirty US companies. Changed their whole system and made it impossible to get out because they were incredibly in debt to these companies. This paved the way to where they are today. So who is really crooked in this whole thing????

    1. Funny…I thought the meme was hilarious as it was meant to be. Maybe it’s because my tits are calm therefore I have nothing to be offended by. The fact that you would completely disregard the information in this article just because of a joke that was obviously meant as an attempt to lighten the incredibly serious situation. I’m sure back in the days of bra burning and womens rights protests, 40 years ago, telling someone to calm their tits might have been a bad idea. However, these days when us women don’t need to be coddled at every turn to avoid having our pretty little feelings hurt, we take it as freaking joke, lady. So, yeah…calm your tits.

  3. As a pediatric/neonatal nurse, the biggest cause of the microcephaly cases I have seen was mom catching cytomegalovirus at the wrong point in pregnancy (It can also cause deafness if caught at a different point in pregnancy). Pretty rare for a mom to get CMV though, most people are immune to it long before childbearing age. Pesticides though? That explanation makes a crap load more sense, scientifically speaking.

I read this site a lot, rarely comment, but always enjoy. But then, I’m a heretic in the nursing community (and like it that way.)

No where in this literate over the last 70 years is there documentation of Cranial Birth Defect in newborns. Suddenly November 1, 2015 there are over 4,000 babies born in Brazil with shrunken brains.

    What are the variables here:
-The Gates Foundation, around 2011 funded and release GM mosquitoes to “combat” Dengue fever. -Brazil, epicenter of the Zika crisis, uses more pesticides than any nation in the world. Most of the chemical are banned in other countries. And as for babies born with smaller heads, here is a study from Environmental Health Perspectives (July 1, 2011), Urinary biomarkers of prenatal atrazine exposure and adverse birth outcomes in the PELAGIE birth cohort. Atrazine and metolachlor are both used in Brazil. -The TdaP vaccine became mandatory for pregnant women in 2014 despite the fact it has never been tested on pregnant women.
-Pesticides are made in Brazil and a prosecutor is suing corporation fro violation of safety codes because the manufacturing of these pesticides are releasing dangerous toxins into the environment.
-Factor in poor nutrition, severe and endemic malnutrition, lack of basic sanitation, and grinding poverty.
-Use of mosquito spray-aerial & topical.

    Additional information:
Canadian scientist Gary Kobinger, part of a consortium working on the vaccine, told Reuters in an interview that the first stage of testing on humans could begin as early as August.
If successful, that may allow the vaccine to be used during a public health emergency, in October or November: http://www.dailymail(dot)co.uk/health/article-3422951/Zika-vaccine-ready-OCTOBER-Researchers-claim-experimental-vaccine-easy-produce-given-ahead-public-health-emergency.html#newcomment.

Many say that these groups are adhering to the The Georgia Guidestones. It’s worth looking into.
Do I think that the Rockefeller Foundation and the robber barons of the US and their international co-horts have a long term plan for humanity? Yes. We do know that the Rockefeller Foundation funded major medical universities like Harvard, medical schools, AMA and other scientific groups-those that have the means to covertly eliminate humanity under the guise of medical care and public health. The chink in the covert work of these groups has been the development of the internet and the diligence of brave individuals to take the risk to obtain critical information and than release it to the public at the risk of their own lives and careers. I guess their sooth sayers didn’t see this one or they were are so arrogant because they have the world brainwashed and terrorized by a little thing like the measles-people won’t pay attention to those they have their paid for media call “conspiracy theorist”. As many HoBi-like viruses, characterized to date, were isolated from Fetal Bovine Serum originating from Brazil, it is assumed that the agent is probably widespread in Brazilian herds.

Increased demand for Fetal Bovine Serum has led to widespread distribution of FBS originating in HoBi-like virus endemic regions. The contamination of such FBS with HoBi-like viruses may lead to spread of this virus to other regions.

In a study conducted in USA, in mothers with MICROCEPHALIC infants, two sera were positive for antibodies against the NADL strain of BVDV [44]. Pestivirus antigen was detected in 23.6% fecal samples from children, under two years, from Arizona, USA, affected by gastroenteritis often associated with respiratory illness, where no pathogen could be identified [45]. Similar preliminary studies in children from Baltimore and Houston, USA, and Dhaka, Bangladesh, showed Pestivirus associated gastroenteritis. In the USA, specific anti-BVDV antibodies were reported in the 40% of tested sera from identical twins discordant for schizophrenia [46]. This aspect was particularly interesting considering Pestivirus tropism for nervous cells in animal pathology.

Other studies suggested a link between Pestivirus and neurological disorders in humans. Infection during pregnancy and a possible association with some forms of cerebral White Matter Damage (WMD) in preterm neonates have been investigated [47-51].

Viral contamination of fetal bovine serum used for tissue culture: risks and concerns.

    Abstract

Four viral contaminants have been routinely detected in unprocessed and commercial lots of fetal bovine serum: bacteriophage, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, parainfluenza-3 and bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV). Of those, BVDV is consistently present in a majority of commercial lots of fetal bovine serum. Methods for BVDV detection and removal are reviewed. ***The tentative role of an unclassified pestivirus in ***MICROCEPHALY of infants has been reported. Its significance remains uncertain.***http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1665460

“Pestiviruses are ubiquitous pathogens of cattle and frequent adventitious viruses in biologicals. Furthermore, it has been suggested that these agents might be related to infantile gastroenteritis and ***MICROCEPHALY***. Since the virus is highly prevalent in fetal bovine serum, the risk of contamination is high in most laboratories. Thus, the implementation of detection methods in all laboratories is of worth. Despite continuous surveillance, these agents have been detected in cell lines, fetal bovine serum, live and inactivated animal and human vaccines and interferon for human use.”….http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18395415

    Hypothesis

Is some white matter damage in preterm neonates induced by a human pestivirus?

White matter involvement is common in viral infections of the central nervous system. White matter damage, disturbances of myelination, and subsequent microcephaly follow herpes simplex encephalitis,11 exposure to rubella virus in utero,12 13 14 and canine distemper virus infection.15 MICROCEPHALY dysmyelination, glial proliferation,16 ventricular enlargement, and extensive necroses in the white matter10 are associated with pestivirus infection. Because these types of damage so closely resemble those of WMD in preterm neonates, we suggest that human pestivirus is a likely mediator of virus induced WMD
